There are several top-quality theatres located in and around central Christchurch, offering a variety of live music, comedy, opera and theatre. In addition, the Montana International Jazz Festival attracts artists and spectators from across the globe.

The Great Hall Arts Centre offers a fine selection of classical music year round, while the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, located on the University of Canterbury campus, offers offbeat student plays, as well as comedies. The Christchurch Operatic Society stages modern Broadway musicals at the James Hay Theatre, situated in the Town Hall. Other notable theatres include The Court, Christchurch Repertory and Royal theatres.
